How We Age

What is intrinsic ageing?

It is your skin’s natural and biologically programmed ageing response. Within the skin, collagen production slows and elastin, the substance that enables skin to bounce back into place, has less spring. The dead skin cells do not shed as quickly and the turnover of new skin cells decreases.

What is extrinsic ageing?

It is ageing resulting from external elements, such as smoking, stress and climate factors. Most premature ageing is caused by sun exposure.

Skin is made up of cells called fibroblasts, which produce collagen, elastin and GAGs (Polysaccharides.) They make up the skin’s extracellular matrix and participate in cell regeneration, healing and immune defence. Fibroblasts are vulnerable to damage by UV rays, pollutants and chemicals, so maintaining them is imperative to slowing skin ageing.

Dr Hayflick’s Limit Theory of Ageing

Dr Leonard Hayflick Ph. D.Dr Leonard Hayflick Ph. D. is a microbiologist whose research revolutionised cell biology and helped to provide a scientific foundation for the field of cellular gerontology (cytogerontology); the study of ageing at the cellular level.

He was a founding member of the Council of the National Institute on Ageing, consultant to the National Cancer Institute, the World Health Organisation Chairman of the Scientific Review Board of the American Federation for Ageing Research.

What is Dr Hayflick’s Limit Theory of Ageing?

Dr Hayflick’s theory suggests that cells have a limited capacity to replicate. As we age, our cells divide and, according to Hayflick’s theory, each cell is limited to the number of times it can divide before it dies.

By slowing down the division and growth rate of skin cells, based on Hayflick’s theory, ageing may be slowed by extending the lifespan of cells. When you slow down cell division, you preserve telomeres, (youthful cell chromosomes or the cell’s internal biological clock). The telomere is a region of DNA that prevents the chromosome from destruction. Therefore, by maintaining the telomere, you slow down cell division and this may be a way to maintain youth.

The big question is, how do you inhibit cell division? Inhibiting cell division can be achieved through Dormins. The term "Dormins" comes from dormancy - which is the natural state plants enter to protect themselves from unfavourable environmental conditions. For example, during winter, flower bulbs lay dormant until spring, then they blossom.

The same technique can be applied to ageing skin cells - when you add “dormins” to a cell, it becomes dormant, ceasing to divide, therefore it is great for anti-ageing. Dormins deliver the extraordinary dormancy capacity of plants to the skin.

Ingredients

Aloe Vera

The aloe vera plant, Aloe Barbadensis Miller, is recognised as having many health promoting benefits when applied to the skin. Modern research has shown that the pure inner gel of the aloe vera leaves contain over 200 constituents, including essential minerals, vitamins, enzymes and amino acids, plus the unique aloe vera polysaccharides.

Aloe vera works to create a moisture barrier on the skin to prevent loss of hydration. Independent laboratory studies show that aloe vera assists ingredients to penetrate and absorb three times better than water.

Aloe vera also contains anti-inflammatory properties and protects the skin from UV Rays. Its anti-ageing properties show that when it penetrates into the skin it stimulates the skin’s fibroblasts to produce collagen and reverse the visible signs of ageing.

Glycolift®

Glycolift® boasts an abundance of skin enhancing, anti-ageing benefits. It is made using polysaccharide Glycofilm® and its association with alginate, plant propanediol and gluco-oligosaccharides.

Studies have shown that a significant smoothing effect was perceived only 30 minutes after application of this ingredient. Hyaluronic acid in Glycolift® makes the skin soft, as well as increasing moisturisation and improving skin elasticity, providing ultimate hydration.

It has both immediate and long-lasting effects and acts as a protective agent against environmental factors such as UVB sun damage and free radicals.

Gatuline Intense® (Spilanthes Acmella Flower Extract)

The main components of Gatuline Intense® are called alkylamides, known in traditional medicine for their analgesic and immuno-stimulating effects. It works in a variety of ways and is an active ingredient that is measurable from the first application.

As a concentrated firming and wrinkle smoothing ingredient, Gatuline Intense® has been proven to reduce wrinkle surface by up to 51% on the first application. It helps restore the characteristics of the young dermis and fights the loss of skin firmness, leading to a reduction in skin roughness.

Gatuline Intense® also boosts the cellular dynamism by reorganising and tightening the collagen fibre network.

IBR Dormin® (Narcissus Tazetta Bulb Extract)

Sourced from daffodils, IBR-Dormin® is high in antioxidant properties.

It works to correct oxidative damage by free radicals, improving the appearance of the skin. IBR Dormin® also slows cell proliferation through dormancy. Naturally, flower bulbs go into a state of dormancy, conserving their energy while waiting for better conditions to grow. Studies show this “dormancy” stage can be transferred to the skin. According to Dr Hayflick, limiting the cell’s ability to divide through the use of dormins can delay the ageing process.

IBR Dormin® has also been formulated to preserve youth and lighten the skin by slowing melanocyte growth, (the pigment that controls the colour of your skin).

Snowflake® (Leucojum Aestivum Bulb Extract)

A botanical ingredient that is part of the anti-ageing technology called “Dormins”. According to Dr Hayflick’s Theory of Ageing, research on Dormins shows that they effectively inhibit contraction of muscle cells which can cause expression lines, thus, smoothing the skin and reducing wrinkles. Intrinisic (Natural) ageing can also be slowed based on this theory.

Snowflake® also increases the natural defence of the skin through significant antioxidant enzyme Superoxide Dismutase, which repairs cells and reduces free radical damage. This anti-ageing ingredient can also improve skin tone and elasticity.

Argan Oil

Indigenous to southwestern Morocco, Argan Oil is revered for its beauty rejuvenating qualities. It promotes elasticity to the skin and is effective in fighting the signs of ageing and sun damage. It boasts superior hydrating qualities and serves as an emollient, attracting and retaining hydration to the skin. It is good for both dry and oily skin, as it assists in regulating the production of sebum.

Also containing vitamin E (tocopherols), essential fatty acids, natural antioxidants squaline, polyphenols, sterols and carotenoids that combine to protect against free radicals.

Zemea®

Zemea® is a high performance, environmentally sustainable, natural alternative to other commonly used synthetic ingredients.

A highly active and effective ingredient, it is an emollient, humectant and solvent. Derived from corn sugar, Zemea® is known for its purity, lack of irritation and sensitisation and its environmentally friendly nature. It has been tested in two independent patch tests at concentrations of up to 75% and has not produced skin irritation or sensitisation reactions.

French Green Clay (Montmorillonite)

Montmorillonite clay is known for its absorption.

Rich in vital minerals and fine essential oils, Montmorillonite exfoliates, cleanses, smoothes and softens the skin, while drawing away any toxins that may be present.

As Montmorillonite carries a negative electrical charge, it naturally opposes toxins, which carry a positive charge, effectively removing them from the skin. The positively charged impurities can lead to skin ageing, so by applying the negatively charged Montmorillonite clay, the toxins bond to the clay and are then removed from the body. This helps to detoxify the skin.

Vitamin C (Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmatite)

Has a lightening effect on the skin and plays a role in promoting collagen synthesis. It protects against free radicals, UVB damage and has superior skin penetration abilities.

Phyllanthus Emblica Fruit Extract (Amla Fruit Extract)

Studies show that Amla Fruit extract reduces UV-induced pigmentation and hyperpigmentation, as well as lightening the skin.

Extracted from the Indian gooseberry, it contains a large amount of vitamin C, which is beneficial for the skin as it aids in the production of collagen.

Vitamin C is also a powerful anti-oxidant, which can help fight free radicals that cause premature ageing to the skin.

Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A)

Effective as an antioxidant and skin-cell regulator which can help improve the skin tone and texture. Known to repair the cells where collagen and elastin reside, vitamin A assists in facilitating communication between skin cells, as well as encouraging ageing cells to continue their renewal process.

Sunflower Seed Oil (Helianthus Annuus)

Sunflower seeds contain large amounts of vitamins A, D and E. They can help maintain the structure of the skin’s matrix, assist in preventing moisture loss and cell damage and promote a soft, smooth and healthy appearance to the skin.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

Vitamin E is a naturally occurring antioxidant that can protect from free radical damage, as well as oxidative stress. It is also a great skin-conditioning agent and moisturiser.

Squalene Olive

Our skin naturally contains 12 - 15% squalene, which is the skin’s own moisturiser and protector. As we age, our skin’s ability to produce squalene decreases, resulting in dryness, dehydration, irritation, premature ageing and dull, lifeless skin.

Squalene can be found as a naturally occurring substance in olives.

It works to help protect the skin from environmental elements, retain moisture, hydrate and combat dryness, therefore maintaining the suppleness of youthful skin.
